Founded on the Principle of Clear Guidance

Sterling Harbour emerged from a conviction that investment consulting can operate differently—focused on understanding rather than transactions, transparency rather than obfuscation.

Our Story

Sterling Harbour was established in 2011 following extended observation of how investment advice was typically delivered in Singapore. The founding partners had each spent considerable time in institutional finance and wealth management, developing a shared concern about misaligned incentive structures that often prioritized transaction volume over client outcomes.

The name "Sterling Harbour" reflects our operational philosophy. A harbour provides safe anchorage during storms while allowing vessels to depart when conditions suit their journey. Similarly, we aim to offer stability and perspective during market volatility while respecting each client's capacity to make their own navigation decisions once equipped with proper information.

Our practice adopted a fee-only structure from inception, removing compensation that derives from product recommendations. This eliminates a significant source of potential conflict. Clients pay directly for advisory services received, allowing recommendations to focus solely on their circumstances rather than on commission structures that might otherwise influence guidance.

Over thirteen years, we have refined our service offerings to address specific needs where we believe we add genuine value. We do not attempt to be comprehensive financial planners, tax specialists, or estate attorneys. Instead, we focus on investment portfolio construction, transition planning, and providing clarity during decision points where financial complexity intersects with life changes.

Our client base has grown primarily through referrals from existing clients and professional connections who appreciate our approach. We do not employ salespeople, advertise aggressively, or pursue rapid expansion. Growth occurs at a pace that allows us to maintain service quality and personal attention to each client relationship.

Looking forward, our intention is to continue serving individuals who value independent perspective, transparent communication, and respect for their decision-making autonomy. The fundamental approach that guided our establishment remains unchanged: provide clear analysis, explain trade-offs honestly, and allow clients to chart their own financial course with improved information.

Professional Standards and Regulatory Oversight

Our practice operates under comprehensive regulatory framework and maintains rigorous professional protocols.

Regulatory Compliance

Licensed under the Capital Markets and Financial Advisory Services framework administered by the Monetary Authority of Singapore. We adhere to all MAS regulations regarding client communication, documentation standards, and advisory conduct. Our compliance history is available for review through public regulatory registers.

Client Data Protection

All client information is maintained under strict confidentiality protocols. Data storage systems employ encryption both in transit and at rest. Access to client files is limited to assigned advisors and support staff on a need-to-know basis. We maintain comprehensive data backup procedures and incident response protocols.

Professional Indemnity

We maintain professional indemnity insurance covering potential errors or omissions in advisory services. This provides an additional layer of client protection beyond regulatory requirements. Policy details, including coverage limits and exclusions, are disclosed in our engagement agreements.

Conflict Management

Our fee-only structure eliminates most product-related conflicts. Where potential conflicts exist (such as referral relationships with other professionals), we disclose these in writing before engagement. We do not accept referral fees, soft dollar arrangements, or other indirect compensation that might influence recommendations.

Continuing Education

All advisory staff participate in ongoing professional development through industry conferences, technical workshops, and regulatory update seminars. We maintain memberships in relevant professional bodies and stay current with evolving best practices in portfolio theory, behavioral finance, and regulatory changes affecting Singapore investors.

Communication Standards

We document all material client communications and maintain organized files accessible for regulatory review. Advisory recommendations are provided in writing with clear explanations of reasoning and assumptions. Clients receive copies of all documentation for their records. We respond to inquiries within two business days as standard practice.

How We Think About Investment Consulting

Investment consulting serves a specific purpose within broader financial planning. We do not pretend to address every aspect of personal finance. Tax planning, estate structuring, insurance analysis, and legal documentation all require specialized expertise that we do not claim. Our contribution lies in helping clients think through investment portfolio decisions with clarity and appropriate context.

Market commentary saturates modern media, creating an environment where investors receive constant signals about what to buy, sell, or worry about. Our role involves filtering this noise and focusing attention on factors that actually matter for long-term outcomes: appropriate risk exposure, reasonable cost structures, adequate diversification, and behavioral discipline during market fluctuations.

We observe that many investors struggle not with identifying good investments but with maintaining perspective during periods of market stress or excitement. Portfolio returns often depend less on selecting the optimal asset mix and more on avoiding behavioral mistakes that derail otherwise sound strategies. Our advisory approach acknowledges this reality by emphasizing sustainable implementation over theoretical optimization.

The fee-only structure we employ addresses a fundamental tension in traditional wealth management: advisors who earn commissions from product sales face pressure to recommend transactions regardless of client benefit. By removing this pressure, we can focus conversations on whether action is truly warranted rather than finding justification for activity that generates fees.

Singapore's position as a regional financial hub means residents have access to sophisticated investment products and structures. This abundance of options can create complexity that obscures rather than illuminates. We help clients understand when complexity adds value and when it merely adds cost. Often, straightforward approaches prove more suitable than elaborate alternatives despite their lack of marketing appeal.

Transitions represent moments when investment decisions carry heightened consequence. Career changes, business sales, inheritance receipts, and retirement approaches all create situations where financial missteps can have lasting impact. These periods benefit from careful analysis and measured decision-making rather than rushed action driven by perceived urgency.

Our practice continues to evolve based on client feedback and lessons learned through market cycles. The principles guiding our work remain consistent: prioritize client interests, communicate transparently, respect decision-making autonomy, and maintain independence from product provider influences. These principles proved sound during our establishment and continue to guide our development.
